The Map of Open-Source Science (MOSS) is a researcher’s entry point into the world of OSS for science that helps to improve discoverability of existing open-source scientific software tools and the communities around them.
Open-Source Science (OSSci) is a NumFOCUS initiative – in partnership with IBM – that aims to accelerate scientific research and discovery by improving the ways open-source software in science gets done. OSSci brings together researchers, OSS developers, and other stakeholders to share best practices, identify common pain points, and explore solutions together.
The Map of Open-Source Science (MOSS) – or Map of Science for short – is a researcher’s entry point into the world of OSS for science. The key nodes in that landscape are people, open-source scientific software tools, and published research papers. Additional dimensions include domains, data, AI models, funding events, etc.
The map is interactive, and the underlying dataset is rich and queryable. What tools are available in my area of research? What OSS tools does my group use that a partner university also uses or does not use? How do we differ? What data pipelines are we a part of? What national infrastructure initiatives are we taking advantage of? Who can we hire to speed things up and use image analysis to advance our research?
MOSS is an effort of its namesake Interest Group under OSSci at NumFOCUS. We work with collaborators covering a wide range of organizations in the public, private, and non-profit sector to create a UX for OSS in Science. Come to this session to learn more and join the effort!
